Mi historia con la apnea: de la ciencia al gran azul

Freediving in Barcelona: The Story of Lluís Melús and the Birth of Vertical Freediving

Lluis Melus y Vertical Freediving

I am Lluís Melús, AIDA Freediving Instructor Trainer, future CMAS Instructor Trainer, and SSI Instructor. I am also currently the Spanish Freediving Champion in the disciplines of no-fins depth and free immersion, titles I earned at the 2025 Spanish Championship.

My passion for the sea began in childhood. I always dreamed of living near the ocean and dedicating my life to it. I studied Marine Sciences intending to work in the scientific field, but destiny led me to discover another way to explore the ocean: freediving.

In 2011, I became an AIDA-certified instructor and started teaching in Dahab, Egypt, an iconic destination for freediving enthusiasts. Since then, I have devoted my life to sharing this passion with others, helping them discover the transformative power of freediving.

The Birth of Vertical Freediving Barcelona

Three years ago, Vertical Freediving Barcelona was born, with the goal of turning my vocation into my way of life: living from the sea by teaching and training freediving in Barcelona.

Today, our center has a solid structure that allows us to offer competitive depth training and weekly FECDAS freediving courses for all levels, always focused on three pillars: closeness, safety, and passion.

Teaching freediving is not just about going deeper or holding your breath longer; it’s about sharing a way of life. Freediving teaches you to relax under pressure, trust your body and mind, and stay calm in any situation.

As a father of two, athlete, and entrepreneur, I have seen how practicing freediving helps me balance life: competing, training others, and running a business, without losing connection with what truly matters — the sea.

Freediving as a Path to Health and Longevity

Freediving and apnea are low-impact sports suitable for all ages. After years in judo and multiple injuries, freediving offered me a way to stay fit, competitive, and healthy in the long term.

In this sport, we increasingly see senior athletes achieving extraordinary results, even in Masters +70 categories. It is a path to health, serenity, and inner connection.

Even in places without access to the sea, pool-based freediving training provides an excellent foundation to improve technique, endurance, and mental control. That’s why I firmly believe that freediving should expand into the educational field, with the prospect of an official Sports Technician in Freediving qualification in the future.

The Future of This Blog and My Upcoming Challenges

After the achievements of 2025, in 2026 I will focus my competitive efforts on improving my personal bests and participating in the AIDA World Championships and, hopefully, the CMAS Championship.

This blog aims to go beyond my personal journey. It will be a space for sharing knowledge about freediving and apnea, where I will share techniques, curiosities, exercises, and reflections on training, physiology, and the mindset of this sport.

If you are passionate about the sea and want to discover freediving in Barcelona, learn to breathe better, and push your limits, this space is for you. Connect with the deep blue, and above all, with yourself.
